A Naturalist’s Guide to the Cable News Aviary

❧
Within the mist-choked slopes of Bullshit Mountain lies a chirping menagerie of cable-bred creatures, each honking their ideological cry into the public square like a Dickensian town crier with a grudge. The following is a modest abridgment from the Ledger Ornithologica Absurdum, annotated for the curious, the contemptuous, and the zoologically inclined.

Further illustrations and full-field notes to be released as funding and liver function allow. Taxonomy subject to change pending future screeches.

*The Crimson Crested Crier has flown from its perch on Bullshit Mountain to Washington, D.C. - what species will replace her is unknown. Stay tuned!

Dignity Wraith

Peter Navarro — The Revenant Architect of Ruin

Wraith Class: Charlatan Revenant
Portfolio: Trade, Treason, and Terminal Delusion

He was not hired — he was summoned. Peter Navarro emerged from the burning scrolls of Amazon’s political bargain bin and was raised into the Trump administration like a policy poltergeist, his invocation intoned by a Google search and a whim. There, he became driver of the first great tariff catastrophe. Alongside his imaginary alter ego Ron Vara, Navarro cast protective duties like hexes and draped the economy in nationalist talismans.

He told the president what he wanted to hear — that trade was war, and America could win with a wall of taxes. The result? A record-breaking collapse in American agricultural exports, and the highest rate of family farm closures in a generation. But Navarro remained unfazed — for ghosts, after all, do not eat.

And yet, like any determined wraith, Navarro refused to dissipate. After Trump’s defeat, he reappeared in a new costume: coup planner. With the “Green Bay Sweep,” Navarro presented a fantastical, football-themed blueprint for invalidating democracy — equal parts treason and tailgate. He promoted it proudly. Bragged about it on television. Sold books with chapter titles like “The Plan.” And when Congress came calling, he sneered. He refused the subpoena, waved off accountability, and was jailed for contempt — not for the first time in spirit, but at last, in flesh.

Having outlasted shame, subpoenas, and two indictments worth of common sense, Navarro now serves as Senior Trade Adviser to the National Economic Council — a role that appears to exist solely so that someone in the White House can explain why eggs cost nine dollars and Canada is now considered a hostile manufacturing threat. From this post, Navarro has sketched out the most aggressive tariff scheme in American history: a universal tariff wall against all foreign goods, with special punitive measures aimed at China, Mexico, Canada, the EU, and, reportedly, the cursed archipelago of Samoa.

He has described this plan as “economic liberation”, though for whom remains unclear. What is clear is that the cost will fall entirely on American consumers, whose wallets are now considered collateral damage in Navarro’s long war against imports, logic, and the principles of global trade. Critics have pointed out that the plan will likely trigger inflation, trade retaliation, and supply chain collapse. Navarro responded by smiling and pointing to a chart drawn in crayon, labeled “Made in USA = Freedom.”

Dignity Wraith

Secretary Howard Lutnick - The Merchant of Strategic Misery

Wraith Class: Finance Ghoul; Title: Secretary of Commerce

It began, as such hauntings often do, with a tragedy and a Bloomberg terminal. Lutnick, once the somber-faced CEO who monetized mourning post-9/11, emerged not just as a man of markets but as a prophet of profit through calamity. Having risen from the ruins with spreadsheets in hand and slogans in his teeth, he now presides over Commerce like a Dickensian debt collector — peddling tariffs as liberation, and calling supply shock “the invisible hand giving a firm shake.”

Secretary Howard Lutnick no longer speaks so much as emanates. His utterances drift across airwaves like vapor off a fetid ledger — ephemeral pronouncements with the half-life of a chyron, gone before the fact-checkers finish their first sigh. In his most recent visitation, the Wraith of Commerce opined that elderly citizens asking where their Social Security checks have gone are likely committing fraud, for only the guilty take note when the grift changes direction. It is not policy — it is gaslight as governance, the bureaucratic séance of saying the quiet part louder and in three-piece pinstripes.

He hovers now above the ruins of the supply chain, having declared Liberation Day — the ceremonial celebration of his tariff crusade, in which duties were levied on friend and penguin alike. From the Heard and McDonald Islands to the Port of Los Angeles, no trading partner, flightless or otherwise, was spared his spectral logic: that economic constriction is merely capitalism tightening its belt.

Lutnick is the rarest class of Dignity Wraith: not merely a former man, but a monetized shadow. He speaks in indexes, signs memos with disappearing ink, and calls hardship "a recalibration of expectations." What he cannot privatize, he pathologizes. What he cannot justify, he monetizes. And if your shelves are bare, your checks missing, and your dignity revoked — fret not. According to the Secretary, it's all “working exactly as intended.”

As the shelves grow bare and the ports fall silent, Secretary Bessent emerges — or rather wanes — in full spectral regalia. Once hailed as a steward of sober governance, he now haunts the checkout aisles of consequence, preaching the virtues of “strategic patience” while families barter canned beans for baby formula. His transformation from adult-in-the-room to ossified hype man for economic ruin is nearly complete.

With a bony digit pointed at Beijing and a press release flapping like funeral bunting, Bessent declares the collapse of trade a “testament to American resolve.” It is not resolve we witness, but rot — a dignified decay dressed in policy jargon and empty shelf signage. Call it what it is: the apotheosis of administrative cowardice, where reputations go to die, and Dignity Wraiths rise to take their place.

We can marvel at the audacity or stare in horror at the hollowness — but most of us haven’t the luxury. We’re too busy rationing groceries, dodging price hikes, and pretending powdered milk is a lifestyle choice. The spectacle of collapse has become background noise to survival. And while Bessent sermonizes about "resilience" from a podium made of vanished shipments and vaporous credibility, the rest of us are left to build dinner out of metaphors and markdowns. The American Dream, indeed.

 The Centrist Shapeshifter

Formless. Positionless. Lovingly quoted by Politico.

“He’s not like the others. Until he is. But ironically.”
— Observation scribbled in the margins of a Beltway brunch invite

The Centrist Shapeshifter is a curious entity, long thought to be an unstable fusion of Joe Manchin’s self-importance and Kyrsten Sinema’s performative independence. When that binary star collapsed, a new mass took its place:

Fetterblob.

Current Form:

A Carhartt-clad contradiction.
A creature of hoodies, quips, and carefully curated working-class cosplay.
He appears to speak plainly—but what he says is often carefully positioned to land precisely in the median between Fox News ire and MSNBC discomfort.

Like the Sinemanchin before him, the Centrist Shapeshifter:

  • Votes unpredictably but always with maximum spectacle.

  • Complains loudly about dysfunction while basking in the glow of media fascination.

  • Frames contradiction as authenticity.

    “He’s not flip-flopping—he’s complex.”

Morphology:

  • In photos: schlubby.

  • In committee: silent.

  • In interviews: zingers, mug clinks, and “Look, I just think...”

  • In actual votes: TBD, then retweeted.

He appears in memes. He spars on X. He shuns decorum—but somehow remains beloved by editors desperate for a centrist savior who can “talk to the base.”

Former Occupants of This Space:

  • Joe Manchin: Powered by coal subsidies and vibes.

  • Kyrsten Sinema: Last seen ascending a corporate ladder in sequins and contempt.

The Access Wraith

Once a Journalist. Now a Vessel.

“He says outrageous things to control the narrative.
I say reasonable things to keep my seat at the table.
We are both, in our way, performing.”

— From the private notebook of a fully transformed Access Wraith

The Access Wraith was not born. It was made—in the crucible of late-stage media, where exposure is currency, outrage is traffic, and access is all.

This specter was once someone. They asked hard questions. They won awards. They quoted style guides.
Then came the lure of “exclusive access to Trumpworld.” A campaign plane. A leaked memo. A one-on-one in a Mar-a-Lago breakfast nook.

To remain inside the velvet rope, the Access Wraith shed its form—and with it, all vestiges of skepticism. What remains is an echo that nods along, tweets quotes without context, and whispers, "Yes, but what if he wins again?"

Phases of the Wraithing Process:

  1. Proximity – "I’m just here to cover what he says."

  2. Pretext – "You have to understand his base."

  3. Parroting – "Sources close to Trump say he’s more focused than ever."

  4. Possession – "He’s changed. You’ll see."

Distinguishing Traits:

  • Spectral Press Pass: Still worn proudly, though no longer necessary.

  • Haunted Bylines: Pieces that resemble journalism but function as transcripts with light editing.

  • Obligatory Objectivity: A reflexive tic requiring bothsidesing of attempted coups.

Notable Access Wraiths

Still visible to the naked eye. Still credentialed.

  • Maggie Haberman, The New York Times
Once a reporter. Now an archivist of palace intrigue.
Possesses an uncanny ability to delay major revelations until book launch, at which point national security concerns are rendered “complicated.”
May be glimpsed in Mar-a-Lago’s hall of mirrors, scribbling into a leather-bound notebook labeled For Later.

  • The Specters of Fox & Friends
Not individual wraiths, but a swirling collective.
They do not interview so much as amplify. They summon Trump not with a phone call, but with flattery.
Feed off guest segments, soft lighting, and off-screen producers whispering “Don’t interrupt.”

Known to emit phrases such as:

  • “He seems sharper than ever.”
  • “What the media won’t tell you…”
  • “It’s just refreshing to hear someone speak their mind, even if it's in all caps.”

Diagnostic Signs of Access Wraithdom

If you observe three or more of the following, consult an ethics manual immediately.

  • Sane-Washing
    :
The persistent tendency to recast erratic or dangerous behavior as calculated political maneuvering.

“He was surprisingly disciplined in last night’s speech, despite the screaming.”

  • Exclusive Syndrome:
A compulsive need to prefix every Trump interview with “exclusive,” even when it’s the third that week and the questions are pre-approved.

“In an exclusive sit-down, the President repeated his usual threats, but more slowly this time.”

  • Off-the-Record Reliance:
The majority of “reporting” is now shaped by unnamed “advisors,” “insiders,” or “aides with knowledge,” all of whom suspiciously sound like the same three people.

  • Abuse as Access:
Returns eagerly to sources who insult them publicly. Accepts being called “fake news” as a sign of insider status.

“He yelled at me, but I think that means I’m getting to him.”

  • Contextual Erosion:
Reports statements without correction or counterpoint, then posts clarifying tweets twelve hours later.

“We are not the fact-check. We are the transcript.”

  • Panel Proliferation:
Appears on cable panels to describe what Trump “really meant,” usually in opposition to what he very clearly just said.

    “It’s more nuanced than that.”

  • Vanity Metrics Over Veracity:
Prioritizes pageviews, Twitter followers, and book pre-sales over public understanding.
Is known to refer to crisis coverage as “good for the brand.”

The Dignity Wraith

A Phantasm of Groveling, Clout, and Shame Deferred

It is said there was once a line—perhaps faint, but real—beyond which the respectable dare not crawl. A boundary not of law, but of shame. That line no longer exists.

The Dignity Wraith saw to that.

This incorporeal force haunts green rooms and golf courses alike, emanating from Mar-a-Lago like sulfur from a cracked boiler. It is invisible to most—but detectable by the sudden, unexplained willingness of elected officials to:

  • Pose beside golden statuary in rictus grins

  • Describe felonies as "administrative irregularities"

  • Greet public humiliations with phrases like "witch hunt", "alpha move", or "actually good for polling"

The Wraith feeds not on flesh, but on reputation. It requires no sacrifice but the constant abasement of the self—often in exchange for nothing more than a “truth” post and a pat on the head from someone shouting about the Deep State.

Known Victims:

  • Lindsey Graham, last seen weeping into a necktie on national television, defending the honor of a man who once accused his family of murder and his friends of treason.

  • Kevin McCarthy, whose vertebrae were declared ceremonial and non-functional sometime during the 2023 debt ceiling talks.

  • Marco Rubio, now more vapor than man, having once denounced Trump as a con artist before reemerging as Florida’s most articulate enabler.
Once he stood on debate stages invoking dignity. Now he tweets indignities in fluent hostage-speak.
The Wraith seems to have found in him not just a snack, but a favorite chew toy.

  • J.D. Vance, now Vice President of the United States and full-time revenant of reputation collapse.
Once a trenchant critic, now a willing familiar—he campaigns in trucker hats and harvests memes for the Algorithm, all while mouthing economic populism with the glazed look of a man no longer sure whether the words are his or the Wraith’s.

Manifestation Signs:

  • A sudden reversal of public opinion, usually within 24 hours of an indictment.

  • Public statements beginning with "What the President meant was..."

  • Spontaneous utterances of "the base loves it."

Methods of Containment:

None known. Attempts to confront the Wraith with evidence, consistency, or even direct video clips are absorbed harmlessly into the void.
